Austin is located at the point at which Colorado River crosses the Balcones Escarpment in the South Central part of the state. Austin was originally named Waterloo, it was renamed after Stephen F. Austin. The capital of Texas is Austin, it is 80 miles northeast of San Antonio and it is the state’s fourth largest city.

First one on our list:

  1. Texas Capitol: Capitol is 20 ft taller than the dome of Capitol Building in Washington DC. Texas Capitol is made of Italian Renaissance Revival style built in 1885. It is located in a 22 acre park along with other monuments and statues.

  • 2) Bullock Texas State History Museum: Museum contains three floors of interactive exhibits with a separate theme for each floor. There is an impressive 400 seat IMAX theatre featuring new and classic movies. A must see on third floor is original NASA mission control consoles and oil field drill bits.   • 3) Franklin Barbeque in Central East Austin. Well known restaurant featuring amazing barbeque meals. A must try! Address: 900 E 11 Street Austin, TX 78702. Telephone (512) 653.1187

  • 4) Zilker Park: The park is south of Colorado River downtown Austin. It is 351 acres in size. Within the park there are picnic sites, playground, volleyball courts, botanical gardens, outdoor theatre and nature center. Highlight of the park is the Barton Springs pool; which is 3 acres of natural spring where the temperature is set at 20 degrees Celsius throughout the year.   • 5) Uncommon Objects: For shoppers in search of unique sovenirs this is the place for you. This store is a maze like home filled with weird and wonderful pieces from folk art to time worn treasures. Display of items include old toys, impressive jewelry, skulls, globes and sports memorabilia. Address: 1602 Fortview Rd, Austin. Telephone (512) 442.4000

  • 6) Museum of the Weird: The museum was originally opened as a gift shop with a small section at the back allocated with selection of weird stuff but the owners Steve and Veronica Busti soon realized that there was more value in showcasing these items as memorabilia than selling for a profit.   • 7) Peter Pan Mini Golf: Mini Golf is equipped with two 18 hole courses which are decorated with bizarre statues and obstacles. It was opened in 1948 with the design ideas depicting the popular tale of the boy who never grew up along with other random ideas. Address: 1207 Banton Spring Road, Austin TX 78704.   • 8) Little Longhorn Saloon: Chicken Bingo is the process where a bet is made on a particular chicken and when that chicken makes a bowel movement a prize is worn. Address: 5434 Burnet Road, Austin TX 78756. Telephone (512) 524.1291
