What is Carnival?

The word carnival is made up of two words. Carne means flesh and vale means farewell. Carnival is a unique festival involving public revelry celebrated at the same time each year. This festival entails music, dancing, expression through costumes, masquerading, political commentary, fantasy and spectator participation.

Origin of Carnival

To date there are a series of speculations regarding the origin of carnival and this one is part of that list. According to this website www.rio.com/rio-carnival it was during a Greek spring festival in honor of the God of wine that carnival was created.

Years later the Romans adopted these traditions. That significant day was indeed special because the slaves and the master swapped clothing and endured a full day of drunken revelry.

Carnival Today

The carnival concepts changed throughout the 1800 with more organized parades. The festival was then introduced to the Caribbean by the European slave trader.

Carnival today is a vibrant festival celebrated in most Caribbean countries. It is complied of four elements: song, music, costumes and dance (wine) which also means calypso/soca/steel pan, mas (masquerade).

Carnival calendars are usually jam packed with events prior to the final jump up or parade day. Carnival has become a tourist attraction in some countries and an event not too be missed!
