What led me to Tortola?

During my younger years I was part of a dance group and Tortola happen to be my very first trip with the group. Imagine my excitement!! I had never been to this country before so I was elated. The trip was so sudden, it left me no time for research or review of this place. However after perusing our itinerary I slowly realized there would be limited time to explore..

Upon arrival; the ride from airport to hotel was breathtaking! Immaculate beaches, narrow streets and beautiful natives. The house structure and roadside shops reminded me of my paradise country St. Lucia. After smooth hotel check-in we had a few hours for dinner and relaxation before our first gig in the morning.

Tortola’s History

Tortola is the largest amongst the fifty (50) British Virgin Islands, Road Town is the capital of Tortola. Tortola is composed of a long chain of steep hills uninterrupted by any transverse valley. The island is about three miles wide and it lies about 60 miles east of Puerto Rico.

Tortola is a sailing hot spot which allows for visitors to sail around the British Virgin Islands sampling bits and pieces of each island. It is also the most populated of the Virgin Island. Tortola is well known for its friendly people, efficient hotel staff and powder white beaches.

In-spite of the shortness of the trip we were still able to get a tad bit of exploration in. We experienced mouth watering cuisine, engaging locals, fresh fruits and rich culture. Sampled the well-known rum punch and fresh conch and lobster.

We were indeed consumed with dance gigs and would have loved to see much of the island however we had to remain grateful that these gigs gave us much needed exposure and made way for future dance opportunities in other Countries. I still have intentions of returning to this beautiful island to get the full visitor experience. You should take a trip there too; when your foot path leads you in that direction and check out some of the sights mentioned in this article.
